Supplemental Diet for Hamsters

Completely unaffiliated, just want to make it easy for you!

One frequently asked question is, "Do I have to buy ALL of this?" We highly recommend all of these ingredients, but you may add or subtract things at your discretion.

We developed this basic recipe for Tony's beloved hamster, Wendell. Wendell was afflicted with hydrocephalus, which affected his teeth and ability to eat normally. Tony devised a soft diet for him, and with the help of Erin and other keepers, it has been refined into this formula! This seems to help improve longevity and overall health in our hamsters--but no guarantees!

Besides hamsters with hydrocephalus, this is a wonderful supplemental diet for pregnant mothers, elderly hams needing to keep weight on, and young pups!

This diet is intended as a supplement only. Traditional blocks and seeds should be provided at all times as well.

Wendell's Wonder Food

Use a quality block diet. We recommend Harlan Teklad 8640, but Mazuri Rat and Mouse blocks are okay too. Quickly pulse a handful of blocks in a blender until they create a fine powder. Store in an airtight container.

  1. Bring water to a boil. Measure out chia in a heatproof, medium-sized mixing bowl. Pour boiling water over chia, stir. Let soak for 5 minutes, stir again.
  2. Add baby food, Vitaglow, and coconut oil to chia. Mix to combine.
  3. Add Esbilac powder and brewer's yeast to bowl. Mix until homogenous.
  4. Slowly add block powder, a few spoonfuls at a time. Mix in between each addition. When finished, mixture should resemble a cookie dough consistency.
  5. Keep refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
